PSA Peugeot-Citroën group says the number of employees who volunteered to leave early is too high to keep the plant running until mid-2007. Ryton is now set to close on 8th January 2007. Trade unions are furious. (Ref. 061007)
Peugeot management announced yesterday that it was going to close Ryton, six months earlier than previously told. Production will cease because the total enrolment in January will not be high enough to ensure the necessary production. Nearly 2300 jobs will be cut in January. More than 800 workers have already left – according to PSA – and an extra 400 have applied for redundancy.
