The gap tends to tighten but the British hourly profitability in 13% below that of Germans, 18% below that of Americans, and 20% below that of the French. This low productivity, constant since after the war, is due, according to the study, to a skill shortage (7 million workers are almost illiterate,) a lack of innovation and also weaknesses at the management level.
