On 26 September 2023, the UK supermarket giant announced the introduction of a new category of leave for employees who are taking care of relatives’ children and for whom they are the legal guardians. This new ‘kinship leave’ means employees can be paid parental leave equivalent to that of adoptive parents.
Effective from 2024, this 100%-paid kinship leave will last 26 weeks and is accessible by any employee holding a court awarded Special Guardianship Order and taking care of a relative’s child/children. The court awarded guardianship allows legal guardians to take charge of children whose parents have died or are no longer able to educate them.
