Theresa May’s government is set to spend £2.5 billion (€2.8 billion) on achieving her predecessor’s commitment to 3 million new apprenticeships by 2020. The major innovation in the plan is the introduction of an apprenticeship levy payable by big firms from spring 2017.
From 2017 a number of British employers will have to put their hands in their pockets to finance apprenticeships. However the government, during the presentation on 25 October of its funding plan, has stressed that their contributions will be limited. State funding will 90% for those employers not subject to the levy.
