Theresa May’s shock announcement that the UK would be leaving the EU single market has raised significant worries and doubts for both unions and employers in spite of the fact that the PM’s much awaited Brexit speech was geared to reassuring doubts over the social consequences by notably maintaining workers’ previously acquired rights as well as protection for European workers in the UK. Theresa May also announced strict immigration controls.
“We do not seek membership of the Single Market. Instead we seek the greatest possible access to it through a new, comprehensive, bold and ambitious Free Trade Agreement,” declared the UK Prime Minister during her announcement that the UK would be leaving the EU single market when it exits the EU. This she intends to do without upsetting the nation’s old friend Europe whilst also reaching out to other countries including China, India, the US, Australia, and New Zealand.
