The new Health and Safety (Offences) Act, which comes into force on January 16, will significantly increase both the maximum fine and the range of offenses for which an individual can be imprisoned. After the law on the legal liability of public bodies (see our dispatch No. 070685), this act is the second pillar the British government is using to improve health and safety legislation. From January 16, UK employers will face tougher penalties for health and safety legislation breaches, including imprisonment for a greater range of offences. The new Health and Safety (Offences) was adopted in October 2008.
