On 06 June roughly 1,000 drivers with the high profile private hire transport company, Uber, stepped on the brakes for a 24 hour work stoppage in Birmingham in protest at reductions in passenger fares without their consultation. Currently similar protests are underway by Uber drivers in New Zealand.
Uber drivers are not ‘employees’ and they rarely belong to a trade union, but anger is mounting nonetheless as hundreds of drivers with the US firm Uber went on strike on 06 June in the UK midlands city of Birmingham. According to demonstrators drivers’ pay has been significantly negatively impacted by fare reductions that Uber implemented without any prior consultation. The self-employed drivers also argue that over recent months they are being penalized when they refuse to carry out a journey
