The Prospect professional union has announced that it is set to become the most significant union in the burgeoning energy-from-waste sector following the signing of an exclusive recognition agreement with the French transnational company, Veolia. This is a direct challenge to other unions that organise in the sector, including Unite and Unison but especially the GMB union.
Veolia operates nine energy recovery facilities dedicated to generating power from waste that cannot be recycled and provides just under 10% of domestic electricity. This percentage is expected to rise in order to meet climate change commitments by reducing the damaging methane emissions associated with landfill. Veolia employs 14,000 staff in Britain providing wasting and environmental services with some 1,000 members covered in the energy recovery sites.
