Hungary: government reinstates Sunday opening

Hungarians will once again be able to go shopping on Sundays. An amendment was adopted via the emergency procedure and undoes the current ban on Sunday shopping; a political measure that had targeted international names but even after its implementation had remained highly unpopular. However with all the toing and froing employees have lost out on advantages that the unions want to restore and improve at a time when labor market tensions had put them in a favorable situation.

Sunday closing, a measure that came into effect on 15 March 2015 (c.f. article No. 8877) is a prime example of the governing Fidesz party’s targeted policies, which openly seek to prioritize national business interests over foreign businesses such as Auchan, Tesco, Lidl, etc. Officially speaking the policy aimed to protect small local businesses as well as the right to enjoy rest times and workers’ pastimes.
