Despite a 25% rise in the minimum wage for unskilled workers in 2017 and a further 12% rise in 2018 (c.f. article No. 9927) unions are raising alarm bells over worsening working conditions and labor shortages.

Incomes remains low in the Hungary’s retail sector that has been particularly hurt by an exodus of workers leaving to work abroad. The worker migration phenomenon is affecting small and large businesses alike with Tesco, Spar and Auchan also hit by labor shortages. KSH national statistics indicate that vacancies are three times greater now than in 2013. Currently between 3,000 and 5,000 positions still have not been filled.
