India: how are the labor law reforms progressing?

Labor law reforms initiated by India’s government in 2014 are set to continue during 2018. The ultimate goal is to regroup 44 laws into four major codes namely, salaries, industrial relations, social security and health and working conditions. These four codes are rewriting and “reassembling current labor law provisions into a simplified and streamlined form” clarified Labor Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar. So far only the Salary Code has been submitted to India’s lower house of parliament. Below is a summary of progress to date.

Salary Code. So far only the Salary Code has been submitted to the Lokh Sabha, India’s lower house of Parliament (August 2017) before coming before the Parliamentary Labor Commissions. The Salary Code regroups these laws: 1948 minimum wage law, 1936 salary payment law, 1965 bonus payment law, and the 1976 equal remuneration law.
