Since 01 July, parents of children under the age of 2 in Ireland can take 7 weeks of paid leave under the Parent's Leave and Benefit scheme. Previously, only 5 weeks could be taken through this specific leave that in 2019 was added to parental leave in order to align with the European Work Life Balance Directive.
Adopted at the end of 2019, the Parent’s Leave and Benefit Act (c.f. also article No. 12467) allows parents of a child under 2 years old or who have adopted a child in the last two years to take time off work while being paid by the State at a rate of €250 per week, matching that paid for maternity, paternity and adoptive benefit.
