Italy: 25th national Fiom-CGIL Congress ends with division

“Democracy based on labor.” This was the title, based on article 1 of the Italian constitution, of the 25th Congress of the Fiom, organized in Montesilvano (Pescara), on April 14-16. It was the only CGIL federation where the alternative program to that of the CGIL’s general secretary (see our dispatch No. 091036) was adopted by a majority (70%) and, for the first time in history, it ended with two final drafts. Out of the 694 representatives, 511 voted for the document presented by the Fiom’s general secretary, and 183 voted for the document presented by Fausto Durante, leader of the Fiom’s “minority” wing, which defends the CGIL’s strategy. For the election of the central committee however, the parties reached an agreement on a single list. Gianni Rinaldini, outgoing general secretary, was re-elected, even though he reached the maximum 8-year mandate, but he should leave his position before the next Congress (many say that national secretary Maurizio Landini should succeed him).
