After last week’s negotiations failed over a new industrial plan for the ThyssenKrupp Accial Speciali Terni (AST-TK) site in Umbria, workers have started a week of strike action set to culminate in a general strike throughout the province. The general strike has been called for by the CGIL, Cisl, and Uil confederations together with their metal workers federations. In the standoff between management and the unions over a drastic cost cutting plan for the plant, the unions denounce the threat hanging over the future of stainless steel production in Italy.
On July 17, ThyssenKrupp presented a severe restructuring plan for the historic site at Terni that was re-acquired by the German group after European antitrust intervention in January. Unions are outraged by the plan that targets 100 million euro savings, 40 million euro of which are to result from 550 job cuts.
