Italy: constitutive congress of the CGIL’s chemistry, energy and textile workers’ federation, Filctem

Under the slogan “based on labor,” (which echoes article 1 of the Italian constitution, “a democratic republic based on labor”) the national constitutive congress of the Filctem, born from the merger between Filcem and Filtea (see our dispatch No. 090954), was held in Pesaro on April 7-9, gathering over 640 representatives. 60.69% of the national executive committee elected the Filcem’s leader, Alberto Morselli, as the general secretary, and Filtea’s leader, Valeria Fedeil, was appointed deputy general secretary. A novelty in the Italian union landscape, the Filctem gathers federations representing workers in the industry, craftsmanship, chemistry-pharmacy, textile, clothing and footwear, plastic and rubber, leather, ceramics, glasses, industrial laundry, lights and displays, energy (oil, gas transport, mining), electricity, water and gas services. This new union organization inherits over 250,000 members, 28 CCNs affecting over 1,300,000 workers, 10 supplementary forward-looking funds (with more than 470,000 members) and 3 supplementary health insurance funds (over 310,000 members).
