After the Milan public prosecutor's office (c.f. article No.12381), which in February 2021 demanded that 60,519 platform workers (at Foodinho-Glovo, Uber Eats Italy, Just Eat Italy and Deliveroo Italy) be regularized, Italy’s judiciary is taking another step forward to better protect riders. On 30 June, the Bologna court has ruled that meal delivery platforms cannot force bike delivery workers to accept the national collective agreement (NCA) that was signed on 15 September by the employers' organization Assodelivery and the UGL Rider union (c.f. article No.12130), because that trade union body is not representative.
The Bologna court ruled on a request by the Nidil-Cgil, Filt-Cisl, and Filcams Cgil trade unions that denounced Deliveroo Italy for anti-union behavior. After signing the national collective agreement in September 2020, Deliveroo had in fact required that all riders accept its terms and conditions, or else see their employment contracts halted, while dissenting delivery workers found themselves without a job.
