Participation to the general strike proclaimed by the autonomous trade unions CUB, Al Cobas, SDL e USI on Friday, July 13, was higher than expected. Thousands of demonstrators from all professional categories (except for health and transportation which saw their right to strike reduced to 4 hours) demonstrated in Milan, and hundreds took part in the "Panzanella Party" in Rome, under the Treasure Ministry's windows. In general, union organizations which called for mobilization mostly contest the Prodi government's social policy. (Ref. 070631)
The name for the Roman demonstration, “Panzanella Party”, comes from a meager Italian dish with stale bread, oil and tomatoes, to mean that precarious workers and retired people cannot afford anything else to eat.
