Side effect to the 2011 pension reform, “esodati” are workers reaching the end of their carrier who have signed voluntary leave agreements during a restructuring or reorganization in their company because they were close to retirement age and who could end up with no income when they lose entitlement to social dampers. Following union pressure, three government decrees were issued, allowing about 130,130 esodati (out of a total over 300,000) to retire under the previous system. Soon, the Letta administration should present new provision to put a stop to this problem. In the meantime, businesses and unions are adopting “rescue clauses” in their agreements to avoid this scenario in the future. (Ref. 130499)
