Italy: strengthen control and develop a central strategy to be able to face the increase in deadly industrial accidents

Figures are alarming. The INAIL (the national insurance institute against industrial accidents), has just published the data concerning deadly accidents on the workplace in Italy. They have gone from 1,274 in 2005 to 1,302 in 2006 (+2.2%). Facing this "social emergency", the institute of political, economic and social studies - Eurispes - advocates to strengthen the system in terms of controls and to develop a central strategy on a topic which management is completely decentralized. According to the photo of industrial accidents given by Eurispes, 85% of deadly accidents occur among subcontractors. Men are still concerned more, since women represent 25.75% of the wounded and 7.7% of the dead. In general, the highest death rate is recorded in northern regions, but when the data is brought back to the number of employees, southern regions win the award.
