Italy: the Council of Ministers approved the legislative decree on occupational health and safety

On March 6, the Council of Ministers approved the legislative decree which ends the Testo Unico, the global reform on health and safety (see our dispatch No. 080137). The act's main reforms concern prevention, increasing safety staff representatives, toughening sanctions. Unions are very satisfied with this decree, but employers remain very critical, especially concerning the sanctions. (Ref. 080202)

The Cgil, Cisl and Uil unions welcomed the adoption of this act, but employers’ organizations – with Confindustria leading – remain very critical on the tougher sanctions. Cesare Damiano, Minister of Labor, said that these critics were inadmissible and that the sanctions were “commensurate with the offenses”.
