The 123 law passed on August 3, published in the August 10 Gazetta Ufficiale No. 185, sets the foundations of the large reform of the health at work system which the government has to enforce in the coming 9 months. Already, it is planning to toughen sanctions in the event of offenses to risk prevention rules at work, as well as an obligation to define the costs of security measures in certain public markets, the election of staff representatives in charge of security in all workplaces, and employing 300 new inspectors. In a context specifically hit by deadly industrial accidents, the Deputies’ chamber approved, on August 1, the “Testo Unico” for the protection of health and security at work (see our stories 070197 and 070585), presented by the Minister of Health, Livia Turco, and by the Labour Ministry, Cesare Damiano.
