Latin America: layoffs and job freeze in the car industry

Car manufacturers are laying off by the dozen in Latin American countries. Mexico is not left behind, with over 4.000 job cuts since the beginning of the year. In Brazil, the sector was shaken by several strikes in a row and 15.000 workers were sent to technical unemployment in one week. In these two countries, the car industry is a driving force for job creation and stability, but is subject to the slump of the market in the United States. (Ref. 080822)

In Mexico, it has been five years since the
year was concluded with job cuts. From January to July, 4.000 jobs were cut and
forecasts say that a total of 6.000 jobs will be cut in 2008. The American manufacturer Ford announced in June a $3 billion investment which should have led
to the creation of thousands of jobs in the country. However, on October 22,
the company said it was going to dismiss, by December, 600 people in its Cuautitlan
