Legal provisions governing union law have become obsolete and should be reviewed by the parties concerned. Indeed, the Act passed in 1991, shortly after the fall of the pro-Soviet government, and it goes against more recent laws. After numerous debates, the Free Trade Union Confederation of Latvia (LBAS) reached compromises on some key provisions, including the threshold for recognizing a trade union in a company. The bill should be introduced in Parliament (Saeima) soon. (Ref. 130302)
Necessary update. The first Union Act (Arodbiedrību likums) came into force on January 2, 1991. It regulated issues such as union statuses, union development and registration, unions’ relations with government and employers’ organizations, unions’ rights as regards their function, propriety and economic activity. Since then, it was amended three times only, for minor registration issues.
