The government decided, on September 20, 2007, to open all the sectors of Luxembourg's labour market to workers coming from eight new eastern European countries which entered the EU in 2004. The minister of State to Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Nicolas Schmit, explained that the date May 1, 2009, which had initially been planned for this opening, was no longer appropriate, given the evolution on these countries' labour markets. On the other hand, the opening of Luxembourg’s labour market will not concern citizens from Bulgaria and Romania, who will have to wait until 2008, and maybe even 2011, to get to the Grand Duchy’s labour market.
