After long negotiations which spread on three years, the Malta Dockers' Union, the maritime authority and the Minister of Trade and Competitiveness reached an agreement which links the improvement in working conditions to the reduction of port tariffs. After this tough agreement was concluded, the government can pursue its large reform on Maltese ports. (Ref. 070610)
This agreement wants to rationalize costs linked to port workers and dockers’ employment, which weigh on importers and exporters while safeguarding and improving their working conditions. It notably plans:
- Measures to improve the efficiency of dockers’ work. Dockers accepted to work with different operators and to conclude an agreement with each of them on minimum services levels to guarantee in order to improve service quality when merchandise is loaded or unloaded.
- A softening of recruitment
