Mexican justice has inflicted a serious setback on the American chain Wal-Mart by condemning the illegal character of a clause forcing employees to spend part of their wages in its supermarkets. The distribution giant is number-one private employer in Mexico with 157.000 employees. The compensation payments could be high (ref. 080710).
Wal-Mart employees in Mexico are partly paid with food tickets only valid in the stores of the chain. Last week, the Mexican Supreme Court ruled in favor of an employee who contested this practice. This decision should set a precedent allowing 157,000 Wal-Mart employees in Mexico to claim compensation as victims of an illegal clause. A contract forcing an employee to buy consumer goods in a specific location violates the fundamental principles of the Mexican constitution according to the court.
