On 1 January, the average annual increase in the minimum wage level in the 22 European Union member states with legal minimum wages was almost 11%. Although inflation slowed in all these countries in 2023, the minimum wage continued to rise, in some cases far outstripping increases in the cost of living.
The legal minimum wage increased with effect from 1 January 2024 in 17 of the 22 EU member states (out of 27) that have introduced it. Belgium and Hungary had already applied increases in December. On the other hand, Romania and Luxembourg, which last hiked their respective rates at the end of summer 2023, are not planning an increase until the summer of 2024.
