Morocco: the influx of Moroccan workers to Spain is stronger than the crisis

While unemployment is raging in Spain, will the crisis triumph over the system of legal professional circular migration launched with Morocco? Eduardo Martin Toval, labor and social affairs advisor at the Spanish embassy in Rabat, said: “recruitments tend to decrease, but not as much as one would think (…). For a few weeks, even though pateras (editor’s note: small illegal boats) are coming back, there is not ‘appeal effect.’ With the crisis, Europe isn’t seen as an Eldorado anymore. Everyone knows that, currently, it is very hard to find a job.” While the Group Vips Spanish catering group was expecting to recruit 2,000 Moroccans between 2007 and 2011, since November 2008, all recruitment promises signed with Morocco have been suspended.
