A new fine, set to 6,700 euros for the concerned employer, is incurred since March 1 by all employers paying wages below the legal minimum. It fits into the trend of measures adopted by the government as part of the opening of the labor market to workers from the new member States. (Ref. 070206)
The law on minimum wage was amended to this end, indicated, on February 28, the Ministry of social Affairs and Employment. From now on, labour inspectorate will be allowed to apply these fines directly, as well as those amounting to 8,000 per illegal worker discovered in firms, and 4,000 euros for the private sector. These amounts, which did not surpass 900 euros for firms before January 1, 2005, are supposed to be discouraging.
