Netherlands: regional mobility centers are a success

Over the first four months of the year, the mobility centers (mobiliteitcentra) have seen an additional 44,000 jobseekers and helped 4,200 of them find a job within three months after layoff. This is very satisfactory for Piet Hein Donner, Minister for Social Affairs and Employment, who still manages daily business until the new government is formed. In total, 30 regional mobility centers were created after the immense success of a first experience, tried out in late 2006 on Nedcar’s employees (see our dispatch No. 061247). The auto mobility center (CMA), created ad hoc in October 2006, was used as an example: regional mobility centers, managed by the UWV, are effective because of the numerous partners they work with (towns, provinces, temporary work agencies, training organizations and businesses). In 2009, regional centers had 839 meetings with businesses that wanted to lay off because of the crisis, notably in the industry, services and construction. Unemployment went from 3.6% to 5.2% of active workers from December 2008 to December 2009.
