Brexit/Proposals to keep Great Britain in the EU. The European Commission intends to establish a specific body tasked with examining current legislation to verify that it fully respects the two fundamental principles of the European Union: 1/ the principle of subsidiarity, which limits EU intervention to situations when Member States’ own intervention would otherwise be less efficient and 2/ the principle of proportionality of measures in relation to the target objectives. The European Commission has to communicate its priorities in a work program by the end of 2016. This new project to overhaul the EU acquis, whereas the REFIT program checks that current legislation is in line with the current situation (c.f. article No. 7823), is the European Executive’s response to one of the UK Prime Minister, David Cameron’s demands, so that he can campaign for the UK to remain in the EU in the period before the Brexit referendum, which may be held in June 2016 (c.f. article No. 9362).
