News update as of 31 May, 2018

ILO/ First discussions on moves towards an international standard against violence and harassment in the world of work. Governments and social partners from the ILO’s 187 member countries are meeting between 28 May and 08 June for the 107th Session of the International Labour Conference. Included on the agenda is the topic of potentially formulating an international standard (i.e. a convention or a recommendation, or both) concerning violence and harassment in the “world of work”.  Conclusions from preparatory work are being submitted for discussion (c.f. preparatory report March 2018 page 97), and stem from a multi-country legal framework study as well as responses by the national social partners and government to a questionnaire that asked what a national instrument would ideally contain. In particular, the conclusions propose adopting an international convention that would require the Member States to adopt legislation in order to prevent and sanction violent behavior and harassment. * The concepts of employer(direct and indirect), worker(voluntary unpaid and those seeking employment), and workplace(place of work, work commute, work related travel, training programs), upon whom, and where a ‘zero tolerance’ standard should apply are indeed broad and as such this is a topic that will require close attention….most probably over several years to come.
