Paid parental leave: What advances are the EU Member States making? [data]

The EU’s 27 Member States have until 02 August to ensure their national legislation complies with the European Directive on work-life balance for parents and carers, and includes a period of paid parental leave. In order to ensure a better gender division of family responsibilities, two months of parental leave must be specifically reserved for each parent, who cannot then transfer it to the other. In this article ,Planet Labor reviews how the relevant legislation across the EU Member States’ is developing.

Although parental leave was initially introduced at the European level in 1996, and was further strengthened in 2010 (Directive 2010/18/EU), the take up rate by fathers remains very low. The lack of paid leave in many EU Member States has been a contributory factor.
