Poland: parental leave extended and caregiver leave created

With the law ‘amending the Labour Code and some other laws’ coming into force, both parents and caregivers will enjoy new rights. Worker protections will also be extended with the text notably granting additional work breaks and a right to paid training.

On 08 February 2023, Poland’s National Assembly (Sejm) overwhelmingly voted to adopt (439 votes in support, 6 votes in opposition, 6 abstention) the legislation that was initially submitted on 11 January 2023, which transposes the European directives on transparent and predictable working conditions (2019/1152) and work-life balance for parents and carers (2019/1158). Among the main innovative pieces brought in by the text are:
