On Friday April, 17 Portugal’s parliament adopted a series of measures aimed at boosting the country’s birth rate. Three of these measures will impact the labor market: simultaneous parental leave, extended father only leave, and increased flexibility over working time in the public sector.
Labor code changes. Currently Portugal’s labor code allocates either 120 days of parental leave (for mothers and fathers but not simultaneously) at 100% of earnings, or 150 days at 80% of earnings. Should both parents split the leave period then this total can be extended for a further 30 days (making 150 days at 100% earnings or 180 days at 83% earnings). 42 days of this period are obligatory for mothers after giving birth and 30 days are optional before birth.
