A cross-party parliamentary working group from Portugal’s National Assembly has approved various modifications to the country’s Labor Code, including a reduction in the total duration of fixed term and unspecified term employment contracts. In 2019, following a social collaboration agreement, the decision was made to revise Portugal’s Labor Code (c.f. article No. 10701). The political parties have since proposed many potential amendments. So that final adoption would be possible before the Assembly’s summer recess, this working group was tasked with approving a number of them. The final vote and corresponding debate are set for 18 July.
Fixed term employment contracts on other than temporary grounds to be restricted. Recourse to fixed term employment contracts is normally relied on to fulfill temporary needs. However companies with fewer than 750 staff can use these contracts when they are launching a new business or production activity.
