Portugal’s parental leave arrangements have just been bolstered with a set of new standards that were published on 01 September in the Official Journal (decree 120/2015). The new norms augment paternal leave taken immediately after the birth of a child, authorizes both parents taking simultaneous leave, and makes provisions for teleworking. In addition the decree provides for banning companies that have been found to discriminate against pregnant women from accessing public funds.
New standards. Paternal leave has been raised by 5 working days to a total of 15 working days to be taken within 30 days of the birth of the child. Furthermore fathers must take 5 of these 15 days immediately the child is born. The decree also allows for both parents to take leave together rather than separately, which had been the case previously.
