A bill proposing to extend paid parental leave from four months to six was approved by Parliament on 27 September. The government points to the high cost of the measure and the risk of further discrimination against women. Examination of the text by Portugal's committee on labour, social security and inclusion is due to be completed in January.
The bill – resulting from a citizens’ initiative that collected more than 25,000 signatures in 2023 – was tabled in parliament in August and approved on 27 September by a majority of MPs, with the exception of those from the PSD and CDS, the parties of the governing coalition. The bill proposes to increase the length of statutory parental leave. Currently set at six months, or five months if shared between the father and mother, it could be increased to six months (180 days) or seven months...
