Portugal: temporary work agencies are in the labour inspectorate’s bad books

After many control operations, the General Labour Inspectorate (IGT) suspended the activity of 195 temporary work companies and caused 60 others to shut down. Since the enforcement, in May 2007, of the new legislation which regulates this sector, the IGT undertook almost 500 controls. (Ref. 070777)

The main offenses observed concern the non-payment of the deposit paid upon registering to the labour inspectorate, irregularities concerning social security contributions, the lack of insurances against accidents and delays in the payment of wages. The new law forces temporary work companies (ETT) to enlist on the IEFP register (the Institute for Employment and Professional Training) and to pay a deposit amounting to 200 times the guaranteed minimum wage.
