The trade union confederation CCOO presented, on January 22, 2008, a report which denounces the fact that mutual companies in charge of occupational diseases understate their impact and deny the deaths which can result from them. This concealment could lead to public health services paying for these diseases and complicate prevention. (Ref. 080069)
Joaquin Nieto, in charge of environment and health for the CCOO, explained that the study the union carried out was caused by the obvious inconsistency between figures given by mutual companies and the cases registered by union organizations. According to mutual companies’ official figures, 21.905 people were affected by occupational diseases in 2006, 15.843 in 2007, including a long list of infections, cancers and heavy breathing problems.
