On 5 May, the CCOO (Workers’ Commissions) and UGT (General Union of Workers) announced that they had signed an agreement with the main companies dealing with the installation and maintenance of the fibre optic networks run by Telefónica, the Spanish broadband and telecommunications provider. This agreement, which according to the signatories allows for a noticeable improvement in working conditions for employees, in effect ended the calls by the CCOO and UGT for 7 days of strikes from 6 May. This has not, however, stopped the minority unions — AST, CGT and Co.bas — from calling for rallying. These unions were at the centre of the movement, which began on 28 March gradually took hold across the country.
The two trade unions have obtained the commitment of Abentel, Abengoa, ITC, Cobra, Cotronic, Liteyca, Teleco, Elecnor, Montelnor and Comfica to make noticeable improvements to the working conditions of technicians, who claimed they were made to work for up to 12 hours a day, including on Saturdays and Sundays, for a salary of between 600 and 800 euros per month.
