Spain’s government and social partners have agreed on a gradual rise in the inter-professional minimum monthly salary, which will rise from €707 over 14 months in 2017 to €736 over 14 months in 2018. The goal is to reach €805 by 2020.
Both unions and employers gave the green light to the minimum inter-professional salary (SMI) rise that was put forward by the Labor Department, even though it is slightly below the monthly €886 level union organizations had put on the negotiation table. More than 500,000 employees will be directly affected by the increase but the hope is that the trend will ripple through to salary changes in collective agreements and conventions that are set for renegotiation in the months ahead.
