The Spanish work an average 1,774 hours a year, that is to say 14% more than the average 1,555 hours for the Europe at 15, but slightly less than the 1,815 annual hours for the Americans, according to a report published by the Foundation of the BBVA bank, based on 2005 data. (Ref. 061124)
The Spanish working time has constantly decreased from the 1979’s 2,019 annual working hours, but it continued to stay above the European average, the report underlines. In the meantime, work’s productivity has increased at a distinctly lower rate than that of the EU. According to the report’s authors, one of the possible reasons for this recess is the frail “stock of technological capital.” Indeed, in 2004, the Spanish one was supposed to represent only 5.3% of the GDP as opposed to the 12.3%
