On 26 October, Spain’s Labour Minister Yolanda Díaz announced that she is studying the potential for redundancy payments that can be tailored to individual circumstances. The Minister put forward the idea of adjusting compensation amounts depending on how the employment loss will affect the person’s future career. This would involve ‘reparative and restorative’ compensation, which could vary according to age, gender, training, degree of specialization, and the objective possibility regaining employment.
This ‘reformulation’ proposal is one of several preparatory steps for a comprehensive reform towards a ‘21st Century Worker’s Statute’, involving a root and branch evaluation of the original 1980 legislation that has over the years been subsequently and numerously added to and adjusted.
