Spain, Portugal and Greece announce open borders for new EU workers

The Council of ministers in charge of social affairs is meeting today in Brussels. As it was requested by several new EU members, participants will deal with the issue of free movement and the enlargement. After Finland, Greece, Portugal and Spain have said they want to lift restrictions. France will give its position on March 13th. (Ref.06230)

On Thursday March 9th, the Spanish PM José Luis Zapatero told his Polish counterpart, who was on a visit in Spain, that he had taken the decision to lift all restrictions. Spain’s immigration policy has lead to the legalization of thousands of immigrants. It has also allowed to lower delinquency and to increase fiscal income. This is why the country wants to open its borders on May 1st.
