Independent freelancers, workers on very short-term contracts, and ad hoc workers operating in sectors that are well under the trade unions radars are turning to social networks to mobilize together and gain collective influence over their own specific demands.
While Spain’s trade unions studiously examine their disappointing membership numbers and their faltering credibility within society, group action in the defense of social rights continues to function although in a different more local more focused and more immediate form. A whole series of small scale initiatives by heterogeneous groups have sprouted that have in common the fact they are being overlooked by the larger unions.
