Sweden: different unions unite to write and publish school textbooks for high schoolers

Textbooks reflecting today’s reality.  The idea came from a study published by the Göteborg University that showed that labor-related issues were barely treated in school textbooks.  Meanwhile, Bert Lindman, from Arena skolinformation (school textbook editor) pointed out that high schoolers knew very little about union organizations and collective agreements, and didn’t know they could turn to them when there was a problem.  Thus, the point was to give a comprehensive picture of the labor market by bringing together, to develop the textbook, several unions from different sides.   Seven unions accepted to do this experience: Akademikerförbundet SSR (graduates’ union), Byggnads fackförbundet ST (construction workers’ union), Kommunal (union of town and local administration employees), LO, Unionen (private executives’ union), SKTF (public and private sectors’ union) and Svenska Transportarbetarförbundet (Swedish transportation union).  The project, which should last for five years, is funded by the trade unions so the textbooks can be given for free to teachers that are interested, via the editor’s website.  The aim is to publish 4 or 5 textbooks each year.
