The Swedish Parliament (Riksdag) adopted, on July 4, 2008, a new anti-discrimination law which will come into force on January 1, 2009. It is an update and an overhaul of of the current legislative package which was composed of several texts. In addition, the new agency – the Ombudsman Office against discrimination – was created to monitor its application. (Ref. 080587)
The new law, proposed by the center-right government run by Frederik Reinfeldt (conservative), covers all forms of discrimination, including discrimination on the grounds of gender, gender identity (trans-sexualism), ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, sexual preferences and age. It will come into force on January 1, 2009.
