Sweden: tax cuts to encourage fathers to take parental leaves and leaves to care for sick children

The Swedish government will introduce, on July 1, 2008, a relatively important tax cut for families where the mother and the father equally share parental leaves. It is also thinking about a similar provision for caring for sick children. (Ref. 080239)

Currently, the birth or the adoption of a child enables parents to take a 390-day leave, paid between 80% and 100% of the salary depending on the collective agreement. This allowance is limited to 874 crowns (€92.50) a day. Beyond this amount, parents are entitled to 90 days paid 180 crowns a day (€19). When a child is born, the father is entitled to an extra 10-day leave. From the parental leave, each parent gets 60 days, paid at the same rate as the sickness allowance, and cannot be transferr
