Unions are delighted with the social-democrat parliamentary election win and the nomination of the former President of the IF Metall union as Prime Minister. Elected on September 14, the Prime Minister has clearly indicated that going forward one of his primary goals is to reduce youth unemployment and to safeguard the labor market. However, he doesn’t have the luxury of a majority and he will have to get along with the other parties. The extreme right who continued their advance in the elections is lying in wait.
Reforms to unemployment insurance, education and training. The target that has been announced is that by 2020 Sweden will have the lowest unemployment rate in Europe. To get there the social democrats will work at two levels:
1/ Changes to the conditions surrounding unemployment insurance. They want to give every unemployed person the right to a job, a training program, or an internship within 90 days of signing on. They also want to change the ceiling for unemployment benefits and guarantee...
